Finding the right path through preparedness!

Canada 125Given that I am a huge proponent of spreading the word about preparedness, it stands to reason that every once in a while, my show will go back to basics. No, this isn’t a flashlight and spare batteries type of show, but one that will help you think for yourself.

Once you have that “Ah Ha” moment, many new preppers begin to panic. After all, your thirst for knowledge has brought you an overwhelming amount of new information. Websites galore telling you about the impending collapse of the economy, cosmic entities on collision courses, the police state you are now living in, and so on, and so on. All this can make you panic, and that is a natural reaction, but I hope to ease your fears, teach you how to get that fear under control, and then how to go about getting things started.

Crooked Preppers Path 400This week on The Prepared Canadian we will look at the 6 basic areas of preparedness, how to organize yourself and get you on the right path, and how to do it without feeling that it’s all too late and you might as well give up. I’ll go over how to get started in food storage, water storage and purification, how to get enough energy to run your most important electrical devices, some tips about security, a look into health and sanitation, and why shelter, although it needs to be addressed, can go a little further down on the list than most people think.

It’s all about layers folks, getting a bit of everything, then going back to the top of the list and improving what you have already done. Don’t forget, it’s not always about the black helicopters coming to take your children away to the FEMA death camps…it’s time to relax and think with a clear mind.

End of the World Advise from “Billy Bob Blogger”

Author: Doug Carlsten
Author:
Doug Carlsten

I ran across a “Blog Page” this morning where someone was predicting the End of the World, and lamenting how you will be suffering because you won’t even be able to find the most rudimentary over the counter medicines at your local pharmacy.  They went on to suggest a bunch of herbal remedies, as substitutes to prescription, and over the counter drugs.  It became painfully obvious to me that they hadn’t really done their homework.  I love how people like to do a little research here on the internet… Declare themselves an expert, spew forth a bunch of crap, and the so called “Enlightened” follow their advice without question. (Who are the “Sheeple” and who aren’t?)

end-of-the-world-2Well… I’m not predicting the end of days just yet.  I try to shy away from dire doomsday predictions of anarchy and mayhem.  I will say however that every time I go to the grocery store, it’s painfully obvious, that despite what the talking heads on CNN are telling us, the Economy just isn’t getting any better.  Some 47 million Americans are on food stamps.  Millions upon millions of us are either unemployed, have given up looking for a decent job, or trying to make do with a part time paycheck.  Will the Economy crash?  Will it slide off into a “Depression” that might make the 1930’s look like kindergarten?  Will Doomsday happen?  These are things that YOU have to decide for yourself, but I can tell you that (Even today)… Far too many Americans are having to make decisions about whether to buy their monthly prescriptions —- or food to eat. Country and faith, needing both to succeed!

charlieinthebox166x125On this weeks show of Charlie in the Box radio it will be about those two topic’s that they say we should not talk about, because “it’s just going to start an argument”.. Religion and politics. When it comes to politics, I think John Adams says it best why we should be talking about politics; “I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My sons ought to study mathematics and John Adams govt-uses-fear600x600philosophy, geography, natural history, naval architecture, navigation, commerce, and agriculture, in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain”.

Tonight, I will do my best to break down his quote and bring up other important topic’s about government and politics that I think we as American’s should be talking about. When it comes to religion I think that’s were we as American’s got it all wrong. Religion is where many Americans are divided, and we all know that we should be united. Therefore we as mature men and women have to stop acting like children and have this adult conversation. We have to put our differences aside today and find out what we all have in common and what we as individuals stand for because if you don’t stand for something you will fall for anything.

all_tyranny_jefferson400x300I would also like to talk about country and faith. Country is you, I, our community’s our States and the American Constitution, the declaration of independence and the bill of rights….Hopefully we can all agree on that part. If Americans are able to stand together there will be no tyranny that our enemy can send against us that we will not be able to defeat. The line has been drawn in the sand America, and you could keep backing up and drawing another one but as you can tell, your government will always over step there bounds. If you think that you can handle an adult conversation,..tune in to the Charlie in the Box radio show.

Preparing your Body, Meals from Superfoods.

I am liberty 125We all know about the superfoods. Those spices and herbs that can turn you into a health beast. There are so many great foods out now and the science to back it up is stronger than ever. But the question is, what the hell do you do with a pomegranate seed or how do I incorporate that into an actual meal? What can I do with acai berries other than just pop them into my mouth? I love yogurt and all but besides scooping it with a spoon each morning what else can i do with it?

8-30ChefTonight on I Am Liberty I will don my chef hat for you once again and we will put together some great meals with optimum health. We will explore things like the Allium family and how to make garlic a headliner in a meal. One clove in 4 quarts of sauce just wont do it for the blood pressure. Kale, maybe the greatest green available for consumption but for some reason people think dehydrating them and turning them into bitter salty chips is the best way to eat it them.

8-30SuperFoodsPhysical fitness and Diet to me are step one and two for getting prepared for any disaster. All the cool gadgets and knowledge in the world will assure you zero days alive if your body can’t push on. Its not about fancy diets or omitting this, just eating that. Balance in all things is how you become a health beast. Cinnamon, honey, oats, salmon all power houses. Like I said we all have our own list but how do you combine, prepare and serve them to help your body perform when you most need it.

Herbal Medicine After the Disaster or in Remote Environments

Herbal Medicine After the Disaster or in Remote Environments

8-22-2013PlantWalk_croppedMany preppers and survivalists are very interested in learning about plant medicine.  There is an extremely good reason for this, which is the same reason I founded and run a very successful survival and herbalism school in Texas:  Plant medicine may be all that we have to turn to in a post-disaster situation and the resulting loss of all or most existing allopathic medical care.  In a world without clinics, emergency rooms or even doctors, how would you take care of yourself or a loved one who had a chronic illness like diabetes?  Or deal with an injury that started to become infected?

Other Side herbal-treatmentThere is another reason for this renewed interest in plant medicine however, and that reason is that plant medicine works.  It works as well as it always has worked for thousands of year.  In many cases herbal medicine works better than allopathic or pharmaceutical medicine. I started my journey into medicine as a U.S. Special Forces Medic (a.k.a. Green Beret Medic) and have been using plant medicine for over 20 years for myself, clients and family, for many health issues that people normally go to an emergency room or go to a clinic for.  I have also had several doctors approach me over the years wanting to work more with herbs because they are tired of dealing with a pharmaceutical-driven health care system that is broken in many ways. Rabbits and HAM: Food and Commo for the End of the World!

One of the 8-28Rabbits2simplest ways to prepare for disaster is to buy and stock up on ready-made foods and gear. There is nothing wrong with this unless it is your only strategy or unless you are only interested in being able to survive for a week or two. However, during any kind of disaster that might last weeks, months or indefinitely, it is necessary to have a longer-term plan. This involves sustainable food and sustainable, effective communications.

The most i8-28Rabbits3important thing to remember about long-term prepping is that there is a point where skills actually start to trump gear. Nobody can live indefinitely off of nothing but supplies if there are no skills to allow for sustainable resources. In the case of food, this realistically should include meat. Sustainable meat is very easy to provide in a number of ways, but one of the easiest and most convenient for the prepper is backyard rabbits.

Just like sustaina8-28Commo1ble food, the prepper also should be concerned with sustainable communications. That is, not only radio systems that work and have range, but also are powered by a sustainable, off-grid power source. If you could only choose one type of radio to become involved with as a prepper, learn about and operate, it should probably be HAM or amateur radio.

Join Sam Coffman on The Human Path in today’s broadcast as he explains some tips and tricks for back yard rabbits as a sustainable food source, and also discusses various forms of post-disaster communication to include amateur radio.

What you should consider and know about dehydrating, rehydrating, and canning!

Bexar profile 100There are many out there that are preserving their own foods or are just starting and are on their way to learning the ends and outs of long term food storage. There is a lot to learn along the way and like any other endeavor you enter into it takes a lot of research and practice to get it all down and get it right.  Processing food is a skill, that for many is handed down from generation to generation but it is also a skill that must be mastered. A mistake in re-hydrating, dehydrating, or canning food can be dangerous to those that you love as well as yourself.

canningI am always receiving questions asking about the different techniques, the right and proper tools to use as well as tips, tricks and the best methods to get the desired results in food preparation for short term and long term storage. The questions are many, varied, and without the right answers you can find yourself wasting a lot of time and money as well as putting yourself and those that you love in danger.

On this episode of Preparing for Life’s Storms I will be answering those questions. Questions like; How much water do I use? Does it need to be boiling or just hot or can I use cold water? How much dehydrated corn does it take to make a cup of corn? The list is long but without the right answers the results can be disastrous. So join us and listen in to have these and any other questions you may have answered. If you already process your own food or are just getting started this is a show you will not want to miss.

Dependency on government for your food!

8-26 food 72hours-2What if you were dependent upon the government for your food? Imagine a world where producing food outside the control of the state was outlawed and you depended upon the state to give you the means to procure rationed amounts of state approved food. Sound farfetched? Is it the stuff of some 1950′s dystopian novel or a B list Sci-Fi movie? Not really. Consider that history bears this notion out and that the government ALREADY has the infrastructure to do this, even as they are waging war on small food producers with the fascist alliances with Big Ag and Big Pharma. Join me on Red Horse Unleashed Monday as I return to the air from my hiatus and we will discuss this notion and I want to hear YOUR opinions! The (Almost) Deadly Mistake on Bugging Out!

Has theOzark23177 topic of Bugging Out or the Bug Out Bag been beat to death? You can use the search engines and find an endless  amount of articles and posts on the subject. Most of these articles have been well written and researched… behind a desk. How often do these articles reflect real life experience?, almost never I suspect.

bugoutbag-150x150Personally, I have experienced a time when I wish I would have had a bug out bag and not having one almost cost me my life but this is another story that I may share at some other time. For now I look forward to what we will hear from another who will be sharing their experience of near death and the reasons for and the items he believes are essential to have in your Bug Out Bag. I hope that you will tune in with me and listen as well. Looking forward to seeing you in chat.

8-26number3This Monday, August 26 on The Gun Show, Dave Womach reflects on some major issues he encountered on his recent survival camping trip – One that nearly cost him his life, yet the buddy system prevailed. From close encounters with Grizzly bears, to temperature extremes and exhaustion.

The Bug Out Bag is an essential item, and one that is always debated. This show will focus on the key items to NOT forget. Additionally, what if you could take just one luxury item in your bug out bag? What would it be, and why?

Learn from the hard lessons of this survival camping trip, without having to go through them yourself. Or call in with your tips and tricks to make camping out of a backpack a breeze.

Urban Survival at Home (Bugging In)

TeachingMuch of the hype around preparedness and urban survival focuses on the concept of the “bug-out” bag and its various incarnations; and why not?  It’s a much simpler concept to wrap one’s head around than all the preparation involved in setting up your home as the spot you intend to stay in a post-disaster or even post-SHTF scenario. We teach bug-out scenarios, caches, escape and evasion and much more related to bugging out at my survival school – The Human Path – and it is important to know the full range of skills and equipment and realities around every aspect of bugging out.

8-25UrbanSurvival_01But the cold reality remains that “bugging out” should be your absolute last resort.  If you have spent any time and money at all on preparing your home (or even if you haven’t), your chances of roughing it through a disaster at home are still much better than driving, biking or walking out on your own (or in a group) – possibly to a destination that is a worse situation than the one you are leaving.

While it’s of course a great idea to have a bug-out location and bug-out bag (or a set of them), along with “get-home” bags in the car (probably a better initial investment in time and money), I’d like to walk through some of the major points of prepping your own domicile and hopefully even your neighborhood for a post-SHTF situation.

If it’s not already obvious, one of the nice things about survival is that “simple” is almost always best.  In this regard, let’s look to the basic necessities of survival and determine how we can fulfill those in our own home or apartment.  These necessities are typically: Water, Fire, Food, Shelter and Security.   For instance, one of the first things that students have to do at our Urban Core Basic (urban survival) course is to work as a team figuring out their resources from scrap and salvage spread all over about 5 acres from a “hurricane.”  Students work on what they learned in class to be able to create decent, secure shelters (that they can and will have to sleep in) in a minimum of time, while figuring out their resources and knowledge in the team. Survivalists, Preppers and the others, Whats the difference?

Canada 125About a year ago I wrote a post for the Canadian Preppers Network blog called Two Solitudes. The article was about a division I saw developing between those who consider themselves Preppers and those that consider themselves survivalists. Now, this divide seems to be growing. What’s worse is that there is a whole new category being added to the mix that I call “others” for lack of a better, more polite term.

This week on The Prepared Canadian Broadcast, I’ll explain what I see as the core differences between these three groups, a bit of the history behind them, and why I believe now, more than ever these groups want to separate and in many cases even disassociate themselves from each other.

Survival groupsLately it seems we have all become a bit more complacent. Do we need another major incident to awaken us once again to the reason for being prepared? Who knows when we will see another major event that disrupts our daily routines reminding us why we prepare. We will never have sufficient warning to prepare for the earthquake, flash flood, power outage, or anything else that looms ahead. Always we should remain vigilant and work together in our quest to be resilient, self sustaining and prepared.

Lesson’s to be learned from others and ourselves!

Lessons learned chalk boardIn my mid 20′s I bought myself a 1965 convertible Impala and I fixed it up and started hitting all the local car shows. I had a pair of 13×7 Dayton’s, so if you don’t know, it’s a low rider. But that didn’t stop me from going to low rider shows, and hot rod show’s so people could appreciate the hard work that I put into it. In Clovis California one of the car shows is called the Strawberry Festival, show and shine and this is what happened. There were lots of nice cars throughout the show. A father and son were coming in the direction where me and my car were at, the little boy got really happy and said “ooh dad look, it’s a low rider”, as he ran towards the car. His dad answered back “no we are not going to look at that car, let’s go over here”. So the question I ask, what lesson did that father teach his son on that day?  There’s a lesson here and if you would like to know my opinions tune in this Friday to Charlie in the Box “Lessons Learned”.

Other lesson’s to be discussed, being the better man., forgiveness. Saying you’re sorry, admitting your wrong, love, courage, faith…etc..
