Winter is coming, Prepare Wisely!
Host: James Walton “I Am Liberty

winterThe days are getting shorter and here in Virginia the humidity is beginning to wane. This means different things to different people. Some of us love the holidays and the cold weather. I love the former but hate the latter. This could also mean there are lengthy checklists of things to prepare for depending on your location in the country.

Fall through winter presents very unique situations and opportunities for those of us looking to get prepared. The best use for your time Continue reading Winter is coming, Prepare Wisely!

Winter and Prepping, Staying the Course

Winter Prepping, Staying the Course
Host: Denob “The Prepared Canadian”

WinterWith the snow on the ground and the mercury closer to the bottom of the tube, many of us will semi retire to the warmth of the indoors for the next few months. Gone for now are the days of foraging, gardening, and preparing harvests. A lot of preppers may feel tempted to take some admittedly well deserved time off from prepping, but there is so much that can be done in the colder months of winter, now that you have a little spare time.

WinterThis will not be a show about alternative heat, or how to survive a snow storm, or what to put in your car kit. Let’s face it, all of that should have been addressed already, and it’s time to look forward to spring. Yes, that’s right, I said spring, and no I’m not nuts! Now is the time to start getting a jump start on your prepping for the seasons to come. There are many ways we can do that and it’s all about planning and expanding our skills. Taking a course in ham radio, or firearms safety is one very good way to spend some cold winter days. Also, you can spend a bit more time at the keyboard gathering, printing, and organizing your home prepper library. Continue reading Winter and Prepping, Staying the Course

Fall & Winter Gardening, food & medicine

Fall & Winter Gardening, food & medicine!
Host: Sam Coffman

winterDepending on where you live in the USA, the time is upon us (and even a little past) for planting fall gardens. Sam Coffman talks through a myriad of subjects regarding growing our own food. Do you know how to properly prepare your garden soil? How about water? What if your supply of water was cut off? Would you still be able to keep your garden watered?

On The Human Path Sam steps through several water conservation methods in gardening, and then covers another very important topic: Composting. There are many ways to get your garden soil to the point it needs to be, to grow abundant food and water. Vermiculture, black soldier fly larvae and other insect life in the garden can be essential to keeping the soil fit.

WinterWhat are a few common tips for keeping the plant predators (insect and animal herbivory) at bay? How well to rabbits and chickens fit into the mix of a healthy garden and why? And what about folks who have no place to grow food? Is it possible to grow enough to live on using vertical gardening in the middle of the city?

Sam talks about some of his own experiences with flat vs. forest gardening and some of the positives and negatives behind both of those concepts, as well as what a forest garden is. Finally, heirloom vs. hybrid seeds, seed preparation, plant choices and guerilla gardening are topics for everyone, but especially those living in urban areas as another way to grow abundant food with less effort.

The end goal is to learn to work within the cycles and ecosystems you live in, in a manner that gives you the most return for the least amount of effort and time if possible.

Energy, This Prepper is Not Gonna Leave the Light On!

Lynna 100Sipping hot cocoa while contemplating the day ahead a chill pervaded the room. Glancing at the outdoor thermometer revealed the reason, 42 degrees and only September 5th. The realization that I better get the stove pipe repaired now, hit me. Autumn is on the way and in the natural course of things winter follows and temperatures drop. Autumn also the start of a new school year had me thinking about energy Light bulbeducation. I belong to an electric cooperative which has a great publication called Northern Lights Ruralite containing all sorts of articles on tips for energy savings and the like. A monthly publication I routinely peruse during mornings like today. The article catching my eye this morn, was written by Hailey Hawkins called Become a Student of Savings and was directed at college students. The information Hailey supplied is valuable and without risking plagiarism I want to forward some of the tips on to you. While her article specifically focused on college students I found the tips beneficial for all of us.

The monthly budget is a concern for all of us and winter as beautiful as it is usually means a substantial increase in expenses. Energy being chief among the culprits of my dollars a plan of defense is in order. Often when reading about energy savings the writer starts off with the basics such as turning down the thermometer to 68 during living hours and 60 at bedtime or when away, while this is a very valid tip and in actuality I did begin with it I want to bring up a few things you may not have thought about.
