The Road Not Taken

The Road Not Taken
Host: Noreen “The Homestead Honey Hour”

roadSome of you may know the popular poem of the same name, penned by American Icon Robert Frost. It is a beautiful piece of prose that always makes me think. It really is a fine prescription for how to live your life.

This week on the Homestead Honey Hour join me, Noreen for an hour of introspection. A metaphoric journey on the road less traveled and how it relates to the lives that we choose to live. In this chosen lifestyle, no matter what you like to call it, prepping, homesteading, preparedness, survivalism, we are all choosing the road less traveled and sometimes we wonder, should we have taken the other road? HERC TEA LIGHT OVEN

HERC TEA LIGHT OVEN CREATOR
Host: Katzcradul “The Homestead Honey Hour”

TEA LIGHT OVEN - Lid StonesThere are so many things to consider when putting together your emergency preparedness plan. Providing clean drinking water may be at the top of your list, or storing food for your family. How to heat your home in the winter, and alternative cooking methods are probably near the top of your list as too. If you’ve followed Katzcradul’s YouTube channel for any length of time, you know that all of these topics are a concern for her as well. Storing buckets-full of healthy grains and beans, are of little benefit in a long term emergency situation, if you have no way to cook them, converting their nutrients and calories into digestible, tasty food for your family. Your eyes are open. You have watched over the last few years as various aspects of our culture and society spiral out of control, seemingly ever faster. You have that gut feeling something wicked this way comes. It’s why you prep. It’s why you strive for self-sufficiency. You look at your family and where you presently live – weighing the pros and cons – and you wonder: Should you re-locate or stay where you are? The Unexpected, Are You Prepared?

The Unexpected, Are You Prepared?
Host: Noreen “The Homestead Honey Hour

UnexpectedOn this episode of the Homestead Honey Hour, join Noreen who will be completely off the cuff. This has been a crazy beginning to the new year in our home. Started off with a broken heater, just before the coldest days on record for our area. Then it culminated with a broken stove, a flat tire and a couple of exhausted parents. All that being said, sometimes, even being prepared, cannot really prepare you for those things that creep up when you aren’t expecting them. In the end, they usually lead to a big old fashioned life lesson that we can take with us and not repeat what we have gone through. Continue reading The Unexpected, Are You Prepared?

Common Core Education = Communist Indoctrination

Common Core Education = Communist Indoctrination
Host: Noreen “The Homestead Honey Hour”

Common CoreHave you noticed something different about the way your children are being taught? Have you noticed the way that teachers approach their job lately? Have you noticed little changes in the work your children are bringing home? Did you think there may be something wrong but just couldn’t put your finger on it? Well you are right! Changes have been made and new structures have been implemented. Teachers are no longer teaching. They are doing what they are told. Teachers are now nothing more than babysitters who spy and take note. They are forced to monitor and assess. They have little choice in this matter if they want to keep their jobs. She’ll also be discussing what we need to do to put our garden to bed for the winter, in order to have it in tip-top shape for next spring’s planting. ready your garden for winter

Katz will also talk about the importance of taking stock of our equipment and supplies and replenishing where necessary…and not waiting until the last minute to do it. Although we ‘put the garden to bed’ for the winter, we should not be napping! Winter is the perfect time to catch up on all those odd jobs, that we find so hard to get to during the busy part of summer. She give a list of chores we should be working on during the ‘off season’. What you perceive as reality may merely be an illusion.

Reality Check600x600Remember when you believed notions like, my government has my best interest at heart, the food in my grocery store is safe to eat, what’s reported on network news is the truth, my nest-egg is secure in the bank,  the medical/pharmacological industries care about my health, or that it really mattered if you were a Republican or a Democrat? Remember when you began to get the first impressions that something wasn’t just right, that the everyday life you were living, wasn’t quite what it seemed, and that long-held truths were not true at all? You came to understand that much of what you had perceived as reality was merely an illusion.  People in the ‘preparedness community’ refer to that time as when you became “awake”.  You suddenly felt a sense of urgency, a need to search for what was true, and to prepare for the future.  You might have developed a keen desire to learn to grown and preserve your own food, to get out of debt, or homestead honey 125to become more self sustaining.  Do you still feel it?  Do you wake-up every day, eager to pursue the path of self reliance, or have you decided to nap for a spell since nothing catastrophic has happened, and it seems nothing of real significance is looming on the horizon?  Join Katzcradul on The Homestead Honey Hour as she discusses recent news that should have us all on our feet and working just as diligently as we ever did to ensure our families are prepared to face a future fraught with challenge.

Winter Gardening with Caleb Warnock: Feed Your Family Year Round!

Feed Your Family Year Round on The Homestead Honey Hour!

6-20 showDSCF9010     A few weeks ago, I stumbled upon a YouTube video of a fellow giving a tour of his snowy, Utah garden in February.   Astonishingly, it was filled with green, growing edibles.   Double-take.  I live in gardening zone five.   During the winter, my garden lays dormant, sadly vacant and abandoned until the planting madness of spring begins.   This is just how it is for gardeners in the North.  So, what was this dark magic being showcased on YouTube?  Who was this wizard coaxing green shoots, leaves, and plants to live and GROW amidst the snow?!?   I had to investigate.   Soon, I was rabidly perusing this man’s blog, intrigued by his unusual (in modern times anyway) gardening techniques as well as being thoroughly entertained with his writing style and approach to life.   I was hooked.   Continue reading Winter Gardening with Caleb Warnock: Feed Your Family Year Round!

Why we homestead on “The Homestead Honey Hour”

Homestead6-8-2400x300Why we homestead on The Homestead Honey Hour. Is it because we want to be more self-reliant? We want a better quality life for our family? We want to prepare for emergencies or because we want to be a more in-depth participant in the circle of life? We all have our reasons for storing water, putting in gardens, stocking our pantries and raising livestock. And there are as many reasons as there are people who act on them.
For me personally..I have gone through a shift in my life..I want to live a more traditional life. Why? Because for me, simpler is better, healthier and makes me happier. But also because I want to help bring back the knowledge of a simpler time..when quilts were not just blankets for warmth but works of art. When canning made sense because it was economical and made you feel good because you had food put by for winter! When milking a goat and drinking it raw and chilled was a healthy practice..not a criminal offense. I want to be a part of bringing BACK a way of life that makes sense. This is why we homestead. Why do you? Please call in and share what makes you happy about your life choices today.
