Stomach ulcers, or peptic ulcers, are very common. Once thought to be caused by spicy or acidic foods, it’s now known that peptic ulcers are caused by a bacteria, H. pylori, or through long-term overuse of anti-inflammatory medications, such as NSAIDS or ibuprofen. They can be painful, and cause a host of problems ranging in severity from heartburn to gastrointestinal bleeding. Antibiotics are often prescribed in cases of H. pylori, which is also known to be a carcinogen, but it is difficult to treat, and tends to reemerge. Continue reading The Digestive System Part III
