With the cost of eggs and chicken in the stores, and the uncertainty of exactly where they came from or what they have been fed, I’d like to start raising my own chickens. But unlike gardening, I know very little about chickens. I know barbecue wings with ranch dressing make a great snack. And I know that I don’t like my yolks runny. Beyond that, I’m clueless. I have so many questions. What breed is best for egg layers? What breed is best for meat? What is the best method for raising them…free range or a coop? How well do the chicken tractors work? Are there any foods that a chicken shouldn’t eat? How do you take care of them in the winter? I could do some research online and maybe get some answers. But I’d prefer to hear from someone with first-hand experience. Continue reading Chickens, raising your own!→
As important as seeds are for growing food, there are some seeds that I feel are much more important. I’d like to talk about the seeds we sow each day by our actions. In everything that we say and do, we plant a seed. It can be as simple as saying hello to a stranger, paying for someone else’s meal in a restaurant, or calling the owner of a lost dog after seeing the phone number on the dogs caller.
In each case, it’s possible that you may never see that person again. But you don’t know what the future holds. There may come a time or situation where you desperately need help, and one of those people remembers how you had helped them. Or they may show up at your door one day with a gift of thanks. You just never know how things will play out. But one thing is certain; you can’t reap a bountiful harvest without first planting the seeds. Continue reading The Seeds We Sow Every Day!→

Have you been watching the prices in the grocery store, as the product packages shrink?
What’s the answer? Grow your own produce. Every gardening question you ever wanted to ask but no one to ask it to. Well tonight on Preparing for Life’s Storms, BexarPrepper will welcome in Bobby (mhpgardener) an avid gardener, friend and gracious spirit. Bobby built both his greenhouses; I like to call them hangers cause their big enough to fit a plane in. He is learning hydroponic gardening he also gardens the traditional way, like the rest of us. Bobby grows some of the sweetest tomatoes I have ever tasted, nothing like what you get in the grocery store. So let’s all come with our questions and learn from the master and make our gardens as productive as possible to combat inflation.
For this week’s show on Preparing to Provide, I am going to have somewhat of an open format. Unlike shows in the past where I have had guests or a designated topic, I am going to cover a broad range of questions that I receive in response to my YouTube videos. They may be related to gardening, hydroponics, or life in general. Many times, the answers are too complicated for a 2 or 3 sentence response. Some of the questions for this week: Am I concerned about the commercial fertilizers that I use in regard to how they affect me or the environment? How do I feel about the amount of plastics that I use in my hydroponics setups? How did I build my greenhouse? What is the best advice I’ve ever received? Where do I get square buckets?
But I don’t want this show to be solely about me. This is an hour in my schedule that I have set aside to make myself available to anyone who would like to talk to me, regardless of what the topic is. So feel free to call in with your questions, comments, or suggestions at 347-202-0228, and be sure to press 1. I’d like to hear what you’re up to.
