I’m just gonna go ahead and say it: comfort foods should not be stored for your own comfort only. They make excellent post-collapse bartering items. Most of them require no cooking, only a good storage place. The only thing you need to consider is the shelf life. In what follows, I’m going to give you 7 excellent items with great shelf-life as well as tips on how to store and cook them.

If you are preparing to function as the health/medical person in your family or mutual support group, caring for burns must be part of your training. Burns are wounds. And while first degree burns (usually sunburns) can be miserable, second degree and third degree burns are serious wounds that require skilled attention ASAP. What do you do if skilled care is days away, or worse… not coming at all? Continue reading Herbal Burn Care!→
Honey is truly ancient medicine. The first written reference to the medicinal use of honey is on a Sumerian tablet over 4000 years ago. Honey has been used medicinally ever since. Honey is useful for many conditions, including wounds, burns , and some of the toughest bacteria we may ever encounter. Plus, it does all of this for less than ten federal reserve notes!
I count myself very lucky that seven years ago my husband decided to keep bees. We always have raw, local honey and wax on hand for all of my herbal projects, and I can’t imagine being without it. Granted, our original interest when embarking upon beekeeping was in the homebrewing of a honey-based alcoholic beverage known as mead. Since then, however, the use of honey has become a major feature in my herbal practice. Continue reading The Healing Power of Honey!→

Herbal remedies are a severely underutilized resource by preppers. Plant-based remedies provide an easy, affordable, and renewable alternative for post-collapse medicines. Herbs, mushrooms, trees, and other natural items, like honey, provide a wealth of traditional remedies that you can make and grow at home with minimal and easy-to-obtain equipment.
Herbs also have a sort of stealth function built into them that many preppers can appreciate. You can stock up on lots of your own, custom-tailored herbal preparations and formulas without drawing the same kind of attention and compromising questions you might garner if you tried to stock up on pharmaceuticals. And, due to the fact that the average person is largely clueless when it comes to plant identification outside of a tomato and a cucumber, your Survival Herb Garden will not draw the kind of attention as, for example, your vegetable garden. Most will think your herbs are either a pile of weeds or that your medicinal flowers are purely ornamental. Continue reading The Basics of Making Herbal Formulas→
When I was a little girl, seldom did we go to the doctor, use medications bought in the store or even antibiotics! I was 11 before I got infected tonsils and had penicillin for the first time. Personally I think antibiotics are WAY over used. So if we didn’t use all these things what DID we use? Honey, poultices, weeds, herbs, whatever worked. The doctor was only a last resort…and the way our healthcare systems are going, knowing more about how to treat yourself at home is becoming more and more important! This week’s show is about simple Herbal medicines and home remedies that until 50 years ago. Were prominent in most homes!
I am not a doctor, a health practitioner or a homeopath. I am just a woman who would rather try and fix it herself before she spend 6-12 hours in a waiting room!
Come join me The MrsVolfie and the other honeys of The Homestead Honey Hour while I share some of my favorite herbal remedies!
