The days are getting shorter and here in Virginia the humidity is beginning to wane. This means different things to different people. Some of us love the holidays and the cold weather. I love the former but hate the latter. This could also mean there are lengthy checklists of things to prepare for depending on your location in the country.

Living a prepared life and learning to do so has opened the eyes and minds of many to the way things were, prior to the industrial revolution spreading across the land, changing the way we do most everything. The advent of the steam engine and electricity opened the flood gates of technology and with it a host of contraptions to easy the burdens of mankind engulfed society. A little something we call Progress, convenience, efficiency, abundance, ease and creating more with less. Each passing decade beginning in the mid to late 1800’s has taken the masses further and further away from hand and home production to machine and factory. As we approach the holidays in a week we will be surrounded by dozens of people that know so much about us. Many of those family members who have known us our whole lives may not know that we share concerns about this world and prepare for them. The holidays are a time to come closer and give thanks for all we have. It might also be a time to find out who else has the gas masks in their attic.
It’s the smell of turkeys when your eyes open or football and cheap beer, its your favorite drunken uncle. The holidays often illuminate something that is kept deep in the recesses of our minds until the latter portion of the year. Some people may scoff at some of us who choose to store what would be considered luxury items such as chocolate chips, nut meats, brown sugar, canned pumpkin, sweet potatoes and evaporated or condensed milk. However, these ingredients are used year round, not just at the holidays to make special treats. Most of them are nutritious, delicious and add an important part to your food storage, not to mention the ability to avoid appetite fatigue! So lets all talk about what to buy, the best way to buy and the best way to store some of these yummy and important items for the holidays and for everyday!
