Can You Afford To Get sick When SHTF?

7-19-14 woman-with-a-cold-or-allergyAs the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. In bad times, it would be worth much more than just a pound. It is as if disaster is form of “illness inflation”.

Everyone gets sick once in a while. If you get sick today, what’s the cost? For most people, it’s going to be a co-pay at their doctor’s office, an additional co-pay (or two) at the pharmacy, plus another $20- $50 in things like tissues, cough drops, and mentholated ointments. It may possibly mean a day at home without pay if you have no sick or personal days to cover you.

7-19-14 onion-ringsAccording to Investipedia.com, the average American with health insurance will spend about $130 due to catching the flu, plus another $92 in lost wages, for a typical total cost of $222 per person. Of course, if you do not have insurance, the cost can be much higher. Still, you will likely recover in a matter of days and return to your normal life, just with a couple hundred dollars less in your wallet.

7-19-14 GarlicThe cost of being sick in the aftermath of a disaster would be significantly higher, though it wouldn’t necessarily be measured in dollars. Imagine you have bugged out to a safer location or have bugged in on your established homestead. Next, imagine you have caught a cold or flu. You can’t just call a neighbor down for favor, since the phone lines wouldn’t work. Every day tasks suddenly require herculean efforts.

7-19-14 ginger-rootHow would this impact your ability to feed livestock or split wood? How would this impact your ability to defense yourself or evacuate? What if your minor cold developed into bronchitis or pneumonia and there is no safe access to a hospital?

It is all too easy to get run down and vulnerable to infection. And while I normally focus on herbal remedies for these kinds of situations, this Sunday’s episode of the Herbal Prepper Live will focus on prevention by building a strong immune system with immune-supportive herbs and consistent self-care.

        About: The Herbal Prepper Live

Herbal Prepper Live: Herbal Medicine for Emergency Preparedness

Tune in live every Sunday evening for Herbal Prepper Live! Join herbalist and host Cat Ellis as she discusses herbs, oils, and other natural remedies tailored to preppers and survivalists.

Herbal Prepper Live is one herbalist’s opinion on alternatives to modern medicine during a total collapse of our way of life. In this hypothetical scenario, there are no doctors, EMTs, hospitals, or pharmacies. Medical help is not an option and pharmaceuticals are unavailable. If you or your loved ones need health care, it’s up to you to provide it.

What can you expect to learn by listening to this show? Here’s a sample of what you can expect:

• How to grow and craft a renewable supply of plant-based medicines that will be available to you, even if the trucks stop running.

• All about herbal first aid and making your own herbal first aid kit.

• What herbs you need to start growing and stocking up on now.

• Basic herbal skills, like how to make herbal remedies like tinctures, teas, poultices, infused oils, oxymels, infused honey, syrups, and more.

• How to address chronic conditions that often require maintenance medications if pharmacy shelves are empty.

• How to stop a postpartum hemorrhage without Pitocin.

Ask yourself, could you care for your and your loved one’s health care needs if The End Of The World As We Know It, such as an economic collapse, an EMP, or a breakdown of society and services happened tomorrow?

Or, what if you were suddenly faced with a layoff, a lapse of insurance, denied services by Obamacare- are you equipped for a more personal collapse? Emergencies aren’t always catastrohpic, and personal-level emergencies also need preps and a plan.

If you answered no to either quesiton and you’d like to know more, you are going to want to tune in.

Remember to join us live in the chat room. This show is for you!
