Self-Reliance Skill: Making Soap
Cat Ellis “Herbal Prepper Live”
If you want to stay healthy post-disaster, then you need to learn how to make soap. Soap making is both an essential skill, and an easy craft to learn. Some people, however, are nervous to try making soap at home because it involves lye. Lye is a toxic, caustic substance. But with simple safety precautions, you can use lye to make all the soap you will need to stay healthy.
In this episode of Herbal Prepper Live, I explain how to make both cold process and hot process soap. I will explain what happens when soap cures, superfatting and how to do it, how to stay safe while soap making, plus my favorite soap supply resources.
Most importantly, I share with you the one recipe for making soap that all preppers should know how to make. It is super simple, only requires 3 ingredients, minimal equipment, and can be customized for a bunch of different uses.
Soap is a critical part of good hygiene. The simple act of proper hand washing cleans more than just dirt and grime off our hands. The friction created by the soap’s lather removes both bacteria and viruses from our hands. This is our most simple and effective way to prevent the spread of disease.
I will warn you of one thing. Once you make soap for the first time, you will be hooked. It’s ok. It happens to everyone that learns how to make soap. You will want to try out several versions of what I consider the “Ultimate Prepper’s Soap”.
As you get more comfortable making soap, you will want to try new molds, colorants, herbs, and aromas. Perhaps You will want to experiment with soap for your dishes and your clothes. There is something deeply gratifying about making your own soap. Welcome to your new addiction!
