Realistic Homesteading Expectations and Aspirations!

Are Your Homesteading Expectations and Aspirations Realistic?
Host: Renee “The Homestead Honey Hour

RealisticAsk anyone who has kept a homesteading blog or Youtube channel over the last five years – myself included — and they will tell you there’s a resurgence happening of folks wanting to get “back to the land”, much as there was in the 1970’s. Becoming more self-reliant and sustainable is an aspiration shared by many. Their reasons are many: Concerns over the economy, food security and availability, wanting to raise children in a healthier environment, seeking to be closer to nature, wanting to eat meat raised humanely and grow organic produce, a desire for a slower-paced life, wanting to live off grid without restrictions, zoning, or other legalities, concerns over GMO’s, chemicals, antibiotics, and/or hormones in the food supply, seeking privacy and seclusion, and a plethora of other motivations are prodding people to consider a life beyond the sidewalks. Within the prepping community, it’s almost a natural progression to consider homesteading, as people recognize the limitation of “stocking up” versus the security of being able to make more of something.

RealisticRecalling episodes of “The Waltons” or “Little House on the Prairie”, and armed with well-worn copies of “The Encyclopedia of Country Living”, or “Five Acres and Independence”, folks are scouting out property, plotting, planning, and saving up — dreaming of the day when they can escape from the rat race and simplify their lives. Along with this dream, comes a vision of what life in the country on a small holding will bring and mean. . . . Unfortunately, these expectations are not always grounded in reality.

RealisticThough I encourage anyone with a strong desire for the “country life” to pursue homesteading, I also believe people should know what they are getting into before leaping. It’s a wonderful life, but maybe not as rosy or easy, or “simple” as what one is imagining.

So. . .are you thinking of buying a few acres and moving the family to the country? Great! Join me, Renée, this Thursday April 24th and let’s talk about what you can expect, dispell some common misconceptions, and tuck away those rose-colored glasses. As always, I want you to have success on your journey towards self-reliance while avoiding unnecessary disappointment and disillusion in getting there.
