“Herban” Legends- How to find good information on herbal medicine
Host: Cat Ellis “Herbal Prepper Live”
You’ve seen them on social media, people sharing memes and links to “natural health” and “green living” websites, with claims of simple plants having amazing healing properties. Does coconut oil cure Alzheimer’s? Can cayenne stop bleeding? Will an onion in a sock kill the flu?
Thanks to the internet, it is easier than ever to get information on herbs and herbal remedies. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the information is going to be accurate. In this episode of Herbal Prepper Live, we’re going to talk about some popular “herban” legends. With all the outlandish claims made about “natural cures”, is there any truth to them?
I will take on some of my biggest pet peeves. Some of which include the claim of natural products being “chemical free”, herbal “detoxification” programs, essential oils “oxygenate the blood”, and that onion-in-a-sock thing. I’ll discuss some of the claims about cures used to prevent the plague, like four thieves vinegar (because, it was a vinegar long before it was an essential oil blend), and the cut onion in a bowl.
The truth is that plants, herbs, mushrooms, honey, nut butters, carrier oils, essential oils, and so on, are all made up of chemicals. Many of these chemicals have physiological effects upon the body. Sometimes, these chemicals only have an impact on human cells when in a lab, and have no impact on the body. And other times, herbs can do things that pharmaceuticals cannot.
The trick here is not only to know how to spot bad information, but also to know where to get good information. I’ll provide some solid sources of accurate information on herbal medicine.
