This Friday evening on Foraging For Life we will be discussing the different uses for certain trees as a means to sustain ones’ self along with some tricks one can do to obtain some tasty treats from those trees. We will also look into some of the natural medicinal attributes for a few of the species and other useful things that the giants of the forest have to offer by means of simple survival tips. You don’t have to be a beaver to appreciate the sustainability that the trees have to offer as they provide much more than the common applications of building and heating our homes. Come join us for the discussion and please bring with you some questions and comments! I look forward to seeing you all there.

This Friday evening on “Foraging For Life” we are going to go over some of the very tasty dishes you can make with your foraged edibles. I will go through what I did to process those items and then a step by step with recipes on different dishes you can make with them as well as how to turn them into seasonings. A few of the ingredients we’ll be using include venison, lobster mushrooms, huckleberries and morels. I’d love to hear from you as to what you; the listener, would like to have featured in future shows as well. I’m hoping to put some videos together for this, so cross your fingers and wish me luck.
Foraging for balance in today’s world. Typically on my foraging for life shows I speak about the wild edibles and herbs. This week on Foraging For Life I will be taking a different approach to things and welcome the audience to join me in a discussion concerning balance. The world we grew up in as children has changed greatly. With all that the government is doing in attempt to control anything and everything we do, eat or possess, along with all the encroachments on our rights and privacy, I find myself foraging for the “food” that my being requires so that I may remain a calm, rational and productive individual.
I’d like to hear from you, the listeners, as to what you do to keep the fearfulness at bay in these times, where do you find whatever it is that helps you maintain your balance so as not to be frozen in stagnation? Do you attend church, or maybe gatherings with like minded people? Do you just shut everything down for a time so as to allow your mind to process its overloaded stockpile of information before acquiring more? Do you have the ability to just block out a lot of what is taking place within the Nation? I invite you all to join me and share what “food” you forage to keep your sense of balance in today’s world.
Stranded with nothing to eat, what will you do? This is our topic for the upcoming episode of “Foraging For Life“. The scenarios below are just a couple of untold numbers that could actually take place and put you in a position of having to forage for food in order to survive.
You’re heading home from a family camping vacation and suddenly your vehicle breaks down beyond your ability to repair it. Still being far into the woods you have no cell phone reception, but you’ve left arterial plans of location and times with friends. You’ve already used what little provisions you started out with, so now you just need to find a day or two worth of food for you and the family until help arrives. What do you do?
Cabin fever got the best of you so you put your hiking boots on and headed out for a walkabout into the mountains. While taking in all the beauty, you somehow get turned around and the sun is quickly setting. Panic sets in as you’ve just gotten yourself more lost by wandering about and you feel your energy levels dropping. The two granola bars you jammed into your pocket were eaten hours ago without thought as you were only planning on a day trip. What do you do?

This episode of “Foraging For Life” we will look a few more resources nature has to offer in the way of medicinal plants and herbs. There are several plants and herbs that are in natures medicine cabinet that can help us when no other resources are available. We will talk about a few of these and the necessary procedures required to put them to use. Some of these plant require little or no preparation at all and can be as good or better for you than what comes off the shelf at your local pharmacy. For those that are hungry I’m sure we will have a few nutritious and filling ideas that may just wet your appetite.
Some years ago, I spotted a bumper sticker that read “If you’re not OUTRAGED, you’re not paying ATTENTION”. It was of course a statement directed towards the mechanisms of politics. It has stuck within my mind, and I believe opened my eyes a bit wider to hidden agendas I perceive to be present within that realm.
In reading an article and following blog comments about the Connecticut shootings it became apparent that the “blame game” and “good vs. evil” are alive and well. Some say evil does not exist, just mental illness. I say if you’re going to do away with “evil” then you would have to do away with “good” as well. They represent the opposite sides of the same coin. Hot/cold, day/night, wet/dry, horizontal/vertical, thin/thick, life/death….you get my meaning. Without one the other ceases to exist. Our own individual ability to decipher the difference between the two extremes based on scripting, life experience, and perception allows each and every one of us a scale in which the gray matter falls and where we attempt “balance”. I believe that there are many physical realities or reasons on Continue reading If you’re not OUTRAGED, you’re not paying ATTENTION→
I was asked if I would write an article on “Prepping and Self-Reliance in Northern Idaho”. I laughed and replied, “But I can’t write!” However, truth be told, writing is one of my many passions. Mushroom hunting is another. I love being out in the great outdoors…exploring, treasure hunting, taking in the fresh air and all the beauty that abounds here in the mountainous regions of North Idaho.
This year marks the 18th winter at my current location, roughly 2400 ft. elevation, a driveway that is 8/10ths of a mile long and 13% grade in spots. Getting down the hill? No problem, getting back up the hill…this time of year there’s always a silent prayer at the base of the mountain. In the winter of 96-97 the driveway resembled the Olympic Luge Run, seriously, eight foot walls of compact snow and absolutely NO room for error. Here, being prepared is Continue reading We are prepared and no one goes hungry on the mountain!→

This Friday on “Foraging For Life” we are going to discuss some of the safety issues surrounding foraging for wild edibles, and the reality concerning the risks and dangers involved that are created by not only mother nature, but yes, our own government and chem trails. I’ll be leading the first part of the show with this very important topic and then we will begin our journey into learning about some of the more plentiful and easily identifiable wild edibles that are common to most any area. I’ll be discussing the background of these items as well as some of the preservation methods that can be used with each. Have your pen and paper ready! Come join the fun and bring your sense of adventure along for the ride.
This first airing of “Foraging for Life” will cover how to identify what region you live in and what types of foraging is available. Where to find identification materials that are suited to your lifestyle and why that is important. Learning the seasons of different edibles and looking for places to “treasure hunt” within your area. Being safe while gathering and foraging etiquette.
We hear it all around us, “Times are tough, prices are outrageous, everything is going up except my wages…” Would you like to learn how to gather food from the wild for free? Have you ever asked yourself, ” If I got lost in the deep woods without provisions, how would I survive?” The senses can be trained to pick up on things that most walk past. Foraging, gathering, gleaning; whatever you care to call it, can be a life saving skill. I sometimes refer to it as treasure hunting! I have at times set out to find a particular food, weather it be berries or fungi, and came home with wild medicinal herbs, pine pitch or cones. I’m amazed at the vast array and abundance that our planet provides for us naturally…we just have to learn to read her labels of identification. Wouldn’t you love to know how to preserve for later use that which you have just gleaned from nature? I have lots of wonderful tips and procedures, recipes and tricks of the trade to help you find a wealth of useful skills to keep your treasures stable for later use. I invite you to join me in Foraging For Life to discuss and share the skills and knowledge of gathering wild edibles. Not only will we expand our ability to identify and use that which nature supplies, but we will also strengthen our sense of self-reliance by shedding some light on the practice of foraging. I gladly welcome any of your experiences and knowledge, please feel free to come check out the show and share them with me. Hope to see you there!
