Bleeding, tips to control in emergency!

Bleeding Screen-Shot-2015-02-12-at-19.30.52-332x205Just recently I had the misfortune of accidentally cutting a deep wound in my hand. It was severe enough that I should have gone into the doctor and I still may. I know from experience that properly taken care of it would require several stitches. It is a clean wound so instead I let it bleed a little, then I worked with what I had on hand, Continue reading Bleeding, tips to control in emergency!

Building the Herbal First Aid Kit!

How To Build An Herbal First Aid Kit
Cat Ellis “Herbal Prepper Live

How To Build An Herbal First Aid KitA prepper’s first aid kit is a basic kit that’s often found in a bug out bag or stashed in the car. There may be a larger kit in the house. Sure, you can build a quality kit with a visit to your local pharmacy. But, what if that local pharmacy weren’t there? If we have had a societal collapse, and you run out of your bottle of ibuprofen, clotting agent, or tube of triple antibiotic ointment after just the first month, how will you resupply when there is no pharmacy? We have wrapped up our beehives to keep them warm for the winter. Its only the middle of November, and we have had our second light snow of the year in New England, and more is sure to be on the way. This means skiing, sledding, ice skating, snowshoeing, and maybe even some time out on a snowmobile. It is also hunting season right now. Continue reading Cold Weather Injuries

KISS First Aid- Basic first aid kit pt 2

KISS First Aid- Adding on to the basic first aid kit
Host: Cat Ellis “Herbal Prepper Live

KISS Herbal Prepper Live150In the previous episode of Herbal Prepper Live, we looked at how to build an herbal first aid kit that would address a wide range of issues, the the least amount of items. This kit employed the KISS design principal (Keep It Simple, Stupid), to make this a highly accessible kit to put together, even for a newbie herbalism. This week, we’re going to build upon that foundation with some add-on formulas for common conditions.

In the original KISS herbal first aid kit we discussed, there were ten components. In this episode, we improve this kit by adding in eight new elements, as well as splitting one of the original elements into two. The new formulas include tinctures and salves for the following circumstances: Continue reading KISS First Aid- Basic first aid kit pt 2

Snake Bites, Infections and Herbal Medicine!

Snake Bites, Infections and Herbal Medicine
Host: Sam Coffman “The Human Path”

Snake BitesAs we have talked about before, the three biggest issues after a disaster are very likely going to be food, water and medicine. Add to this the fact that most post-disaster environments are laden with potential health threats: Rubble, obstacles and hazards, open sewage and bacteria-laden water, disturbed wildlife looking for new homes, increased rodent population and more. A lack of medical services really starts to hit home when talking about severe, acute environmental or medical injuries. Two good examples of this kind of severe, post-disaster medical situation are infection and venomous snake bites in North America (e.g. Rattlesnake, Copperhead, Coral Snake, Cottonmouth). Cooking Without Power and Gunshot Wounds!

Cooking Without Power and Gunshot Wounds
Two important topics worth review!

Cooking all-american-sun-ovenWho hasn’t been sitting in a car, windows up, on a winter day and become overheated from the sun pouring in the window. It has always amazed me how much heat is generated from reflection of the sun’s rays alone. There really ought to be a way to harness this incredible free power source to benefit us all…. Yes I know the Solar Industry was born long ago, but until recently the real potential of this resource hasn’t really been touched. Continue reading Cooking Without Power and Gunshot Wounds!
