Survival Triage & More!
Host: Dr. Bones & Nurse Amy “The survival Medicine Hour”
In this episode of the Doom and Bloom Survival Medicine Hour, Dr. Bones and Nurse Amy (Joe Alton, M.D. and Amy Alton, A.R.N.P.) discuss Ticks and Lyme Disease, Triage in survival settings, care of the elderly, tea tree essential oil, and a new virus that’s raging through the Caribbean as we speak.
A mosquito-borne virus, known as “Chikungunya” is on a rampage through the Carribean, and is being brought back by cruise ship passengers to the US. So far, 20 states have been affected by the virus, which cause a flu-like syndrome with pounding headaches.
Tick season is here, and Dr. Bones discusses the tick-borne bacterial disease in detail, with lots of advice on how to avoid being a victim. Juvenile ticks are most likely to cause the illness, and they are about the size of a period in a newspaper column. Make sure you inspect yourself after every wilderness adventure (or even just gardening in the backyard); if you can find these critters within 24 hours of their latching on to you, you’re most likely to avoid getting sick.
Our Summer of Survival webinar went off like gangbusters, and we received TEN pages of questions, which we’ll answer (as many as we can) every week. This week we discuss survival triage for multiple injury events and how to care for the elderly in survival scenarios, even those with Alzheimer’s (sometimes called Old-Timer’s) disease.
Nurse Amy talks about one of her favorite essential oils, Tea Tree! Find out about the many uses of this item that should be in your medical storage.
